VoIP Adapters

Do I need a VoIP adapter?
If you wish to use your existing telephone handset as your VoIP phone, and if you don't want to have to switch your computer on everytime you want to use the VoIP phone, then you will need an VoIP adapter.
How does it fit in to my setup?
If you currently have only one machine connecting to your broadband connection, then the adapter should connect directly with your cable or ADSL modem. This is because most adapters have a router, firewall and QoS built-in to give your voice traffic a priority.
On the other hand, if you already have a router setup, then you can put this adapter in front or behind your router. Most adapters work both ways. However, it is advisable that if your current router do not support QoS, then you should put the adapter in front of the router to guarantee a good VoIP connection.
Where to buy?
Most VoiP providers sell ATAs which are guaranteed to work with their VoiP service. If you need help with the setup process, you will get maximum support from their helpdesk if you buy a recommended adapter. For example, the Vonage package comes with a free Linksys ATA (with built-in router) and Sipgate sells the Handytone 486 also with built-in router.
